Why You Might Need This
WhatsApp doesn't make it easy to export specific parts of a conversation. You can forward messages, but there's no simple "copy all" for a section of chat. Screenshots are often the fastest way to capture a conversation — but then you're stuck with an image you can't search, edit, or paste into a document.
OCR solves this. Upload your WhatsApp screenshot and get all the text — messages, sender names, timestamps, and all.
Step-by-Step: Extract Text from WhatsApp Screenshot
Step 1: Take the Screenshot
On iPhone:
- Press Side button + Volume Up simultaneously
On Android:
- Press Power + Volume Down simultaneously
On WhatsApp Web (Desktop):
- Windows: Press Win+Shift+S and drag to select the area
- Mac: Press Cmd+Shift+4 and drag to select
Step 2: Upload to the OCR Tool
Go to extracttextfromimage.com
From phone: Tap Upload and select the screenshot from your camera roll.
From desktop: Either paste directly with Ctrl+V (if you used a clipboard screenshot) or drag and drop the screenshot file.
Step 3: Extract the Text
Click "Extract Text." The AI will identify all text in the screenshot including:
- Message content
- Sender names
- Timestamps
- Group names
- Status indicators (read receipts, etc.)
Step 4: Copy and Use
The extracted text appears in the output area. You can:
- Copy to clipboard
- Download as a .txt file
- Edit inline to remove parts you don't need
What About Group Chats?
Group chat screenshots work the same way. The OCR will extract:
- Each sender's name
- Their message content
- Timestamps for each message
- Group name (if visible in the header)
The messages may not be perfectly separated since OCR extracts text as a continuous flow, but the content will be complete and accurate.
Common Use Cases
Saving important information: Extract addresses, phone numbers, account details, or instructions shared in WhatsApp chats.
Documenting conversations: For legal, business, or personal records. Extract text and save it in a searchable format.
Sharing quotes: Pull specific quotes from conversations to share in reports, emails, or social media posts.
Language translation: Extract foreign-language WhatsApp messages, then paste into Google Translate.
Accessibility: Convert visual chat content to text that screen readers can process.
Tips for Better Results
1. Screenshot one chat section at a time — don't try to capture an entire long conversation in one image
2. Use light mode if possible — dark mode works but light backgrounds give slightly better OCR accuracy
3. Avoid cropping too tight — leave a small margin around the chat area
4. Full resolution — don't compress or resize the screenshot before uploading
Privacy Note
Your screenshots are processed in memory and immediately discarded. We never store WhatsApp conversations, images, or any personal data on our servers. The text extraction happens securely over HTTPS.
